Campofiorin is a lovely pleasant wine that slips down so readily and casually, but which has a long history behind it. Founded in 1964 by the genius of Guido Boscaini, the Masi installations brought forth the first wine to be obtained using the ripasso technique (a re-fermentation of the wine on the skins and lees of an Amarone). The wine resulting from this ingenious process manages to combine the Valpolicella's immediacy and simplicity with the Amarone's structure and powerfulness. Therein this happy medium lies the virtue of Campofiorin, well-illustrated by the 25 million bottles sold worldwide.
The ideal companion to a typically Italian aperitif, consisting of shavings of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and spicy olives, but also an excellent choice to accompany pasta dishes with a meat sauce or roast meats served as a main course. As its striking ruby-red colour seems to indicate, Campofiorin is a feisty, lively wine. On the nose, it offers cherry, blackberry, plum and sweet spice aromas, which are complemented by other more savoury notes of humus and liquorice. Rounded and with plenty of body, on the palate it reveals fine, polished tannins and considerable freshness. It has a smooth and satisfying flavour, with an enveloping finish that lingers on in a pleasantly fruity touch.
