Founded in 1974, today the Avignonesi winery is owned by the Belgian entrepreneur Virginie Saverys, at the helm since 2009. Titanic effort? Certainly. But also fortunate and far-sighted, because Virginie has taken the reins of a patrimony that has in fact given birth to the modern and contemporary Nobile di Montepulciano. The principles that inspire the company are undoubtedly uncompromising style and territoriality, with the continuous stimulus of experimentation both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
After obtaining organic certification, the first and indispensable goal of the new owners, today they work on biodynamic experiments among the vineyards of Montepulciano towards Cortona. The merit of Virginie is in fact to project the district of Montepulciano, and the Avignonesi winery in particular, towards the most recent frontiers in terms of technology and sustainability.
The most typical wine of the winery is naturally in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano vintage. A product that is always centred, correct and insightful, that best expresses the typicality of the local Sangiovese: the Prugnolo Gentile, a more graceful and docile variant of the variety. Intense ruby but never hypertrophic, on the nose it is all centred on elegance, with notes of violet, marasca cherry, sweet spices, and with more austere and earthy notes in the finish.
On the palate it is consistent: with a graceful and subtle style, it is sharp and rich, with silky tannins and overall envelopment. Merit of Avignonesi's savoir faire in the truly masterful use of wood, which in this case takes the form of barriques and large barrels in two years.
