DoUmia is a wine for straightforward drinking, with no imperfections or pretentions, not artificially contrived and certainly not commercially based; in total contrast, it's an honest wine with a truly original character which we might perhaps liken to some Sicilian wines, the ones made in amphoras. DoUmia has had no contact at all with oak, yet it's a wine with a fair period of ageing, between 9 and 12 months, but in stainless steel. All its complexity, as we'll be describing below, is down to its fruit, to those Mencía, Caíño and Espadeiro grapes, and to the soil.
As a starting point, how many red wines do you know from that bastion of white varieties, the Rías Baixas? DoUmia is a rarity and for this alone it deserves to be known; but then you'll be delighted with everything else.
DoUmia is undoubtedly an Atlantic wine, in every sense and whichever way you look at it, but truly authentic and original. It's an extremely fresh red, with excellent acidity that makes it easily drinkable. A high humidity wine yet, paradoxically and in perfect complement, smoky too; it's dry but sweet, very fruit-driven and also floral, with undertones of dry earth reminiscent of the smell which tubas like potatoes give off straight after being plucked out of the ground in early summer —therefore a definite warmth— but damp earth is also there, with vegetal notes, faded flowers and bay leaves. Its complexity is quite astonishing and most seductive!
DoUmia has a homely, familiar feel about it as well, exuding tradition, and knowing the Alfonso family, it couldn't be any other way. It's an amazing wine, emanating from great sensitivity and good taste, suitable for every type of palate, and with many enthusiasts to be sure. A little work of art from Galicia's wine-producing countryside, a marvel that merits plenty of applause.
